Fresno Pacific University’s view on gay marriage isn’t dangerous

The Sept. 13 Bee quoted one the adjunct music professors who is leaving the Fresno Pacific University because of its policy opposing gay marriage as saying, “It’s just a dangerous ideology, and it’s hurt a lot of people.”

She has a right to her opinion, but she and your readers should know of a statement issued by an entity called Evangelicals and Catholics Together. The statement on reclaiming traditional marriage was published in First Things (March 1), a magazine of the Institute on Religion and Public Life. Its stance, addressing the issue from a biblical basis, is aligned with that of Fresno Pacific University. The article is available at: http://bit.ly/1W14qCG

According to this article, marriage between a man and a woman is not a danger to society but the bedrock of a strong, wholesome and productive society. So to label FPU’s policy on gay marriage as “dangerous” is to ignore the wisdom of Western civilization and Christian scripture, and to discount convictions held by a large segment of the American population.

Elmer A. Martens, president emeritus of Fresno Pacific University Biblical Seminary, Fresno
