Trump: demogogue du jour

There’s been a lot of comment about our demagogue du jour - you know, the one that rhymes with Dump.

However, it hasn’t been much noted that he is just the latest in a long line of such characters. In the 1800s, Irish, Catholics and Masons were the target of nativist groups. In the 1870s, San Francisco had its Workingmens Party, dedicated to driving out the Chinese. In the 1930s, Father Caughlin and Gerald L.K. Smith had millions of listeners for their anti-Jewish screeds. Even Earl Warren deserves censure for his disgraceful treatment of Japanese citizens in World War II.

So for those who read beyond the beginners level in history, we know the Donald is only the latest of a long list of blowhards. We also know he is very dangerous, because he has a huge amount of money with which to spread his vitriol.

I must, in all sincerity, ask Dump (I mean Trump) supporters, would they really like to see this man at the controls of the most powerful position in the world? Remember the ancient Chinese proverb: Be careful what you wish for. You might get it.
