Letters to the Editor

Floyd Buchanan cared for all children regardless of ability

I was appalled and saddened to read the letter from Lin Faeth (Aug. 20) regarding Floyd Buchanan. To attack the motivations and character of Dr. Buchanan shows a lack of sensitivity and knowledge on the part of the writer.

I had the privilege of teaching in Clovis Unified School District until my retirement and I was honored to have been hired by Dr. Buchanan. My three daughters and now my grandchildren were/are students in Clovis Unified, and two of my daughters and my son-in-law are teachers in Clovis.

Dr. Buchanan cared about all children. Anyone who knew him can attest to his genuine love and concern for the success of all students regardless of ability or disability. The special education programs in Clovis are second to none.

Two of the core values that Doc promoted and instilled in every employee were:

▪ “A fair break for every kid.”

▪ “It’s people, not programs that make the positive difference for students.”

All great people have been disparaged at some time by people who didn’t really know them. Anyone who knew Doc knew the kind of man he was. As Deputy Superintendent Carlo Prandini said, “At the core of his no-nonsense, uncompromising approach, he had a genuine care for people.”
