New book helps inmates leaving incarceration

Thanks to Mike Olinger and The Bee for the excellent story (July 27) headlined, “Fresno woman adapting to life after clemency.”

The story of Barbra Scrivner’s very real and undeserved difficulties in re-entering society after lengthy incarceration is representative of what too many released inmates encounter. Having been given the opportunity to work in a local prison with men hoping for release, I can testify to both their eagerness to transform themselves (at least with those we work with) and the lack of preparedness they have to deal with.

With that in mind, I’d like to call attention to a new resource designed for those leaving incarceration, and those in a position to help them. It is a reference book entitled “Roadmap to Reentry: a California Legal Guide,” available from Root and Rebound. There will be a free workshop to introduce the book to the Fresno community Aug. 12. Information can be obtained by e-mail at roadmap@rootandrebound.org, or by phone 510-279-4662.
