Fresno’s success is vital to region
My appreciation is extended to the Fresno Bee for the interesting and pertinent articles recently evident in the July 26 feature piece “Housing fight is looming in Fresno.” Reporter George Hostetter, with insight and a unique historical perspective, continues to demonstrate his keen knowledge of Fresno politics.
Mr. Hostetter reports on the housing mix in Fresno and its contribution to “The Tale of Two Cities,” which continues to stymie Fresno from becoming a vibrant metropolitan community. However, one should note that the administration of Mayor Ashley Swearengin and City Manager Bruce Rudd has made significant progress considering inheriting 30-plus years of mediocre leadership and management.
We should all recognize the significance of Fresno as the economic and civic center for its surrounding communities. Its success is vital to the entire region. Fresno must develop into a more vibrant urban community if we are to stem the “brain drain” of our youth. One important step that the Swearengin administration has demonstrated leadership is housing in south Fresno and the downtown area. Fresno Housing Authority CEO, Preston Prince, also deserves kudos for his innovative and aggressive housing promotions after decades of indifference.
