McCarthy needs to stop covering
We have elected Kevin Mccarthy to represent the 20th Congressional District and we need to hold him accountable. Kevin needs to put the Republican party and country ahead of covering up for Trump.
He needs to take note from former speaker Paul Ryan, who says Trump is a proven loser. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Mark Milley, wrote that Trump was doing “great and irreparable harm to my country.”
We saw Trump make fun of crippled people; say he can grope women. He was found guilty of sexual assault and paid a stripper to not talk about their sexual activity. On television said he trusted Russia’s Putin over our generals. On Jan. 5 before the attack on the Capitol, his representees meet with the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys.
I watched on Jan. 6 when Trump told the crowd the election was stolen and it should go to the Capitol and “fight like hell and take our country back.” I saw Roger Stone who Trump had pardoned from prison meet on the Capitol steps with the Oath Keepers leader. We all saw the attack on the Capitol, which caused death and destruction.
I believe there are some honest Republican candidates. Kevin, quit covering for Trump.

Longtime letter writer signing off
I’ve written letters and have had them published by The Bee over several decades, going back as far as the ‘60s, when my first letter published was in support of Cesar Chavez and appealing to the public to boycott grapes. It was my initial fortunate acquaintance with editorial page editor Jim Boren and Pam Rouse. As Rick says, in “Casa Blanca,” “Louie, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” So it was. My letters looked pretty good after Pam’s work. My family actually enjoyed The Bee’s profiling of me as a writer to the editor, where I received a more-than-deserved write up.
I will be 80 on Sept. 17, and my health is waning, with all physical ailments the Buddha has bestowed.
Ergo, I want thank The Bee staff with a heart full of gratitude for its tolerance of bad spelling and at times the enigmas that I wrote, sorted out by Pam. Her cries were always, “ the letter is too long.” Many friends say they’ve never sorted out the letter, and ask, “ …what the hay are you talking about…” I usually replied, ask Jim or Pam.
Again, short of melodrama, if the gods see the end of the trail for me, it truly was a beautiful journey with no comparison.

Missing the real Trump record
Dear right wingers of Fresno: Reality is staring you in the face. Donald Trump has just been indicted for 37 crimes. Reality. And all you can see are conspiracy theories. Unproven non-events. And Biden crimes that don’t exist.
You don’t see Trump’s major crimes. The Jan.6 seditious insurrection on our seat of government in which five people died ... 150 Capitol police officers were wounded ... many with American flagpoles by Trump’s “soldiers.”
Trump’s “beautiful” phone call to Georgia’s secretary of state to find 11.780 thousand votes. An election fraud felony. The Mar-a-Lago documents felonies. This is what Trump left in the wake of his 45th presidency. The same authoritarian sewage that has turned our once beautiful democracy into a land of right-wing haters.
I’ve watched your Bee letters for many years. I’ve always wondered what kind of bubble you live in. Perhaps it’s safe and soft. Or maybe it’s hard and rocky. You probably don’t notice.

Subsidies for golf courses & churches
I read the op-ed published in The Bee on June 16 from the Los Angeles Times regarding the tax advantages that are given to golf courses. The article lamented the idea that the golf courses are subsidized by people who don't play golf.
I would substitute the word “churches” where the words “golf courses” appear.

Golf merger with murderous regime
Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) notified top officials with the PGA (Professional Golf Association) Tour that he is opening a wide-ranging probe into the PGA’s surprise tie-up with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
In addition, the U.S. Justice Department has also opened an antitrust investigation of the deal.
In 2018, a team of assassination operatives, under the direct approval and direction of Saudi Arabia’s Prince Mohammed, brutally killed an American citizen and renowned journalist in Istanbul, Jamal Khashoggi.
At the time of Khashoggi’s murder, U.S. officials stopped short of directly penalizing Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman — calculating that the risk of damaging American interests was too great. This, even after a thorough investigation and iron-clad proof of the prince’s direct culpability in an American citizen’s murder.
And yet, here we are today.
Where were conscience and truth 5 years ago?
I guess they were out at the local country club — enjoying an afternoon on the links.
A sad statement on the priorities of our leaders.

Here’s to Election Day being a holiday
A recent article in The Sacramento Bee suggested that Juneteenth become a paid holiday. While I appreciate the sincerity of the idea, its significance is rather limited. The Emancipation Proclamation was more historically important.
But to make a far more significant impact on our country, and to the everlasting benefit to those who support the Juneteenth holiday, would be to make our national Election Day a paid day off.
