Letter to the editor: Real danger to America remains GOP leaders like Kevin McCarthy
Kevin McCarthy remains a danger
On Jan. 3, 2021, all representatives of our new Congress pledged “I do” to their oath of office:
“I do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the U.S. against all enemies, foreign and domestic. That I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same. That I will take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion. And that I will well and fairly discharge the duties of office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
On Jan. 6 our nation’s capital was violently attacked by armed domestic terrorists whose insurgency had been cultivated for months by the pernicious insistence of Trump and his MAGA Republican comrades who parroted his “rigged” and “stolen” election lies.
Despite Trump appointees Attorney General Barr and U.S. director of the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency Chris Krebs both declaring the 2020 election was secure, and Trump’s losses of 60 court challenges and numerous state recounts, Kevin McCarthy and 146 Republican representatives chose to hijack the peaceful transition of power with active involvement in a false elector conspiracy.
Worse, once Congress reconvened certification, McCarthy continued to essentially deny all Americans their vote.
Kevin McCarthy dishonored his oath and is a danger to democracy.

Glad for new west Fresno campus
Go FCC! These protesters are late to the party and are uninformed. This plan has been on the books for years. This westside college will benefit all those who live in this area of Fresno.
SCCCD is offering these residents educational opportunities close to where they live. I really liked the location of the college, being located across the street from the Bud Gaston Middle School. Giving their students a vision that higher education is available to them and in their neighborhood.
My question: What will be the name of the college? Hopefully, it will be named after a person from this community who has a strong historical connection to Fresno City College and the State Center Community College District.

Forget having one-party rule
A recent opinion rticle (Oct. 26) explained at some length that having a divided government is “a mess” and went on to suggest that a government where one party controls all the levers is certainly far better.
Near-at-had evidence rebuts this view. Here, in the one-party dictatorship of California, we have the worst roads, the worst schools, and the highest taxes. If that is what a one-party government is going to give our nation, give me the mess of a divided government, please!

He’s had threats for letters to editor
In light of the violent political attack on the speaker of the House’s husband, Mr. Pelosi, I have to not only condemn the extraordinary extreme incivility in politics by right-wing Republicans, but speak to the fact that because I have published letters in The Bee highly critical of them, those kind of threats have reached my door on several occasions.
I’ve received several death threats mailed from the Coarsegold area and the coastal area of California over the past 10 years. The threats also were drive-by death threats by violent people with vitriolic shouts of harm that were to come to me.
I feel I must report this, in light of the Q Anon threat occurring existentially to America.
The law enforcement officers were, and are, responsive to my reports and hold the detailed evidence to seal my complaints on record.
I feel it’s necessary citizens must make the community aware of what could happen by the Q Anon movement of conspiracy theorists that places an immediate threat to minorities and their perceived enemy.

GOP hypocrisy remains on display
I am shocked to hear Republican politicians saying that they are tough on crime. But when it comes to their boss, Trump,
he can break all laws in the land. This is hypocrisy at the highest level.

Fresno should be its own utility
It’s time for change! PG&E has had its way for far too long.
I notice that the three major cities in California — Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Francisco —have their “private utility.” I wonder why that is? Control.
Fresno council members, pay attention. Frankly, I would gladly pay for my electric & gas bill to the city I live in, rather than a huge monopoly. With over a half million residents, it seems the right way to go.

Dreamers still wait to become legal
In response to your article, “Judge rules new DACA program can continue temporarily,” I would like to voice my concerns on Judge Hanen’s decision and Congress’ passivity.
Although it is excellent that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program can continue, it leaves millions of dreamers in a state of uncertainty once again. They are safe now, but for how long?
This is not the first time that Hanen has attacked the program. This ruling is also unfair to those potentially eligible for a work authorization card, but cannot apply as first-timers. President Biden has shown his support for protecting dreamers, but Congress is responsible for not providing a legal path to citizenship for childhood arrivals.
Steven E. Barkan, the author of “Social Problems — Continuity and Change,” published a figure of $2 trillion that immigrants add to the gross domestic product. It would be a disservice to America to not allow dreamers to continue working and provide a legal path to citizenship.
I urge all voters to reach out to their Congress members and demand a call to action.
DACA recipients do not deserve to be left in incertitude but to become United States citizens.

Clovis’ school idea for Fresno Unified
I believe there’s a fundamental difference between Fresno Unified schools and Clovis Unified schools that is fixable.
Clovis doesn’t let one bad kid continue to disrupt the learning for the other 20. The kid is talked to, parents are talked to, action steps are expected to be followed. If the bad behavior doesn’t correct, then the result of their bad actions is Gateway Continuation School.
Fresno doesn’t have that solution, which ultimately makes for a safer improved learning experience for the school population and the staff in charge of them. Isn’t that what it’s supposed to be about?
There’s a Clovis Unified blueprint to follow, including the costs to operate (taxes that Clovis residents pay to fund) a continuation school. One school district is the pride of the valley and the other isn’t close to it. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a game plan for bullies and bad-acting kids so your kid and the teachers feel safer going to Fresno Unified schools?
