Golfer’s paradise

While Milton High School in Florida brags of its three PGA Tour winners in Bubba Watson, Heath Slocum and Boo Weekley, I’m excited to see our own local golf hotbed getting its due.

Congrats to new NCAA men’s individual champion Bryson Dechambeau (Clovis East), as he joins the ranks of 2008 NCAA champ Kevin Chappell (Buchanan), 2012 U.S. Amateur runner-up Michael Weaver (Clovis West), and 2013 PGA Tour winner Derek Ernst (Clovis East). All are part of a long Fresno-Clovis legacy that includes tour winners Nick Watney (Fresno State), Joan Pitcock (Clovis West), Tim Norris (Bullard), Bill Glasson (McLane) and Shelley Hamlin (Roosevelt).

All those names translate into a lot of reasons to keep supporting junior and interscholastic golf in our area.

Jeff Hopper, golf coach, Fresno Christian High
