How to waste food
On my way to work, at a school recently, I passed people collecting money on the corners of Palm and Shaw avenues with signs reading Hunger Heroes.
Not knowing their cause, I wanted to tell them to come by the school for free food, but I couldn’t do that. The school where I work serves free breakfast and lunch to all students.
What upsets me is the abundance of nutritional, individually wrapped food that is thrown away. Students are required to take the prepackaged breakfast or lunch with a milk. Whatever is uneaten, no matter if it is not yet opened, must be thrown in the trash. Even unopened milk cartons are thrown away.
Can someone give me a reason why? Why can’t these foods be donated? And why are we teaching children to be so wasteful? It’s maddening! This system is wrong.
