Devin Nunes protects Trump, rather than us
Re “Trump’s crude comments diminish US, empower China” by Maurice Ndole, Jan 16: Mr. Ndole gives a concise account of how Donald Trump is making China great again by alienating the entire African continent, eliciting a rebuke from the African Union for his recent vulgar and bigoted remarks.
The GOP by its silence and denials endorses and enables Trump, whose insults not only have a negative impact on our global standing but on our economy as well, as China moves to partner with African trading blocs, pushing the US out.
Though Mr. Ndole is right to call on congressional Republicans to censure Trump, that will never happen. GOP Sens. Tom Cotton and David Perdue could have told the truth about Trump’s remarks, but they chose instead to defend him. Others such as our local Rep. Devin Nunes typically behave similarly, showing that they prefer to protect Trump rather than us.
So, the problem is deeper than Trump and this scandal du jour. Yes, his term in office has been a travesty, but the GOP routinely lies and cheats to provide cover for Trump’s bigotry, malevolence and incompetence.
All told, Trump and his GOP are simply the greatest current threat to our national security and well-being.
