Trump ‘shows no leadership’ on renewing DACA. ‘We must demand better’

President Donald Trump hosts Republican lawmakers for lunch and a discussion of tax legislation, at the White House in Washington, Dec. 13, 2017. House and Senate Republicans have reportedly reached an agreement, in principle, on a consensus tax bill, keeping them on track for final votes next week and a bill on Trumpâ™s desk by Christmas. From left: Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.), Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas), Trump and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). (Doug Mills/The New York Times)

My parents taught me to live by the “Golden Rule.” Do unto others as you want them to do to you.

This rule is widely recognized as a good, noble and virtuous axiom for life. President Donald Trump repeatedly ignores this ethical rule. Currently, he shows no leadership on renewing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. He cruelly subjects 200,000 Salvadorians to potential deportation; and, with vulgarities, he insults entire countries.

We must demand better.

The Valley benefits greatly and our diversity is strengthened by many people directly impacted by DACA and the Salvadoran temporary protected status decision.

I’m calling on Rep. Devin Nunes and Rep. David Valadao to show the moral courage to lead their party in calling President Trump to change his behavior.

I urge all constituents in these respective districts to contact these legislators and demand action. As we remember the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., we are compelled to respond to these cruel expressions of racism and hatred in our day.
