Teach young boys to respect girls and women
If you’ve been watching the news or reading the newspaper, it seems that most of the lead stories have been about sexual assault and harassment.
According to the Microsoft Encarta College Dictionary, sexual assault is an incident that involves sexual contact that is forced on somebody or to which somebody cannot consent.
Sexual harassment is unwanted sex-related behavior toward somebody; touching somebody or making suggestive remarks, especially by somebody with authority to a subordinate.
In the articles, the accused come from all sectors of business. From actors and businessmen to the President. Why do some people think they are entitled to treat others with a lack of respect?
It’s disturbing to know that many of the perpetrators think that because they are in a position of power, they can do whatever they want to their subordinates. It’s never appropriate to have any relations with anyone that is ranked inferior to you.
What can we do as a society to curb this type of behavior? We can start teaching boys at a very early age to respect girls and women. We need to help boys develop social awareness and be conscientious of how they treat women.
