How to fight the Valley’s diabetes epidemic
You are what you eat. The Valley has some of the highest rates of diabetes in California. And, up to half of adults in Fresno County are at risk of developing diabetes, according to one study.
Lifestyle factors, such as physical inactivity and poor diet are to blame. While there are numerous other factors that play a role in the development of Type 2 diabetes – including family history, genetics and age – the most prominent and preventable risk factor is obesity and being overweight. What’s more, catching diabetes early, when it’s still considered “pre” diabetes, is key.
How do we do this?
1. Get screened. Go to your doctor’s office for a physical every year.
2. Maintain a healthy weight.
3. Help your children do the same!
