Religious organization surveys children on campus without parental consent
I read with amusement the Pacific Justice Institutes’ memorandum to FUSD about The Bee’s off-campus anonymous survey of student knowledge of sexual health issues. PJI apparently objects to the use of student surveys on matters of sex without parental notice or consent under Education Code 51513.
PJI is an official legal mouthpiece for the California School Project, an evangelical Christian organization that promotes on-campus student surveys of religious practices and beliefs, without parental notice or consent. In fact, the CSP website contains survey methodologies and example surveys on its website.
These surveys are clearly aimed at collecting the religious beliefs of students in order to target them for proselytizing, in clear violation of EC 51515.
As an FUSD parent who had a child repeatedly harassed by adult CSP representatives, during school hours (harassment that only stopped after the involvement of the school administration and the school board), I can’t help but find The Bee’s voluntary survey harmless (and appropriate, given the circumstances of our community) in relation to the inquisition my child was forced to undergo.
Given the facts, I must conclude that hypocrisy is a “Judeo-Christian value.” I know it is not a secular one.
