With the passage of the FUSD board resolution on Wednesday, I am reminded of Natalie Portman’s line in “Revenge of the Sith,” “This is how democracy dies with thunderous applause...” or in this case, unanimous assent by the FUSD Board.

While a strike looms for our community, we should take a moment to pause and look at the group that the district wishes to demonize. They are husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, sons and daughters who have dedicated themselves to the bettering of their community though the process of educating youth.

Teachers are people of high moral caliber who seek to find new and innovative ways to teach as our society evolves and changes. That is why they are teachers. They are ethical and demonstrate a moral responsibility that rivals or is superior to those in power.

But alas, the resolution passed on Wednesday is a duplication of existing laws that prohibit any acts of violence or moral turpitude that may be committed by staff. It is saber rattling and bombastic rhetoric that serves no purpose except to exacerbate the dispute before the community. As Mao said,”May you live in interesting times.”
