Discover living history –World War II vets in their ’90s at the fair
Being the assistant curator at the Veterans Memorial Museum in downtown Fresno, I had the chance to upgrade and enlarge the display at the Fresno Fairgrounds in time for this year’s fair.
There are six figures inside the original Hammer Field barracks in the new museum at the fairgrounds. These six figures (World War II Veterans) are all volunteers at the Veterans Memorial Museum and have been there from 10 to 26 years one to three days a week. All six veterans are from the Fresno area and served in both theaters of war.
All are dressed in period correct uniforms in all branches of their service. To have six World War II veterans all in their 90s as volunteers from one town for all these years to me is amazing, and shows that these gentlemen from the Greatest Generation are still as proud of what they saw as their duty when they were young kids as they do today.
