‘Disturbing’ Fresno Confederate Veterans Memorial removal

The Aug. 20 Bee article describing removal of the Confederate Veterans Memorial in Mountain View Cemetery, was extremely disturbing.

The current frenzy to erase every reminder of the Confederacy calls to mind the mass book burning carried out by the Nazis in Europe prior to our entry into World War II.

You cannot change history by destroying the symbols that represent it. America is, and always will be, a product of its history, both positive and negative. As a nation, we must acknowledge our past and learn from it. There is nothing we can do to change it, we can only move forward and build a better future for all citizens.

The following quote should serve as a sobering reminder to all of us who love our country and value our liberty.

“The most effective way to destroy a people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.”

– George Orwell
