Unitarians find Ashjian ‘unfit’ for school board, call for his resignation

Fresno Unified School District school board member Brooke Ashjian is being called to resign from the board by the board of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno.
Fresno Unified School District school board member Brooke Ashjian is being called to resign from the board by the board of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno.

The Board of Trustees of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno calls for the resignation of Brooke Ashjian from the school board of Fresno Unified School District. His statements, in response to curriculum for sexual education, deny the worth and dignity of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and demonstrates that he is unqualified to serve in any capacity on the school board.

We feel he is equally unfit to be a member of the school board given his stated bias that privileges the Judeo-Christian faith. Fresno’s rich, cultural diversity includes moral and ethical individuals who participate in Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Jewish, Muslim, or Unitarian Universalist faith communities – or no faith community at all.

We question Ashjian’s ability to serve all of the members of our community, so we feel we must ask for his resignation. There is no place for intolerance in education.

Ruth Jenkins, Fresno, president of the board of trustees for the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno
