Betty Sorensen (letter June 21) thinks Garry Bredefeld is a hypocrite because he supported displaying “In God We Trust” in the Fresno City Council chambers, then refused to appropriate money for illegal aliens.

Let’s clear this up, once and for all. To be sure, the Holy Bible is full of admonitions from God, through Moses, and from Jesus, to help the widow and the orphan, and not to oppress the alien. However, the inconvenient (to progressives) truth is that the scriptures do not direct us to reach into our neighbors’ pockets to support charitable causes, nor do they direct us to vote into office politicians who will do the reaching for us.

Charity is a personal obligation of every believer. Ms. Sorensen is free to write a check to support any cause she likes, and these days to even set up a GoFundMe account so that those of like mind to hers can participate.

Bredefeld was correct twice – first when he supported “In God We Trust” and then when he declined to support the misspending of taxpayer money on what should be each citizen’s personal obligation.
