Retired Fresno teacher: ‘Students put out very little effort’

This is a response to the article, “Fresno Unified gets failing grades in national study,” (June 20). It stated that Fresno Unified is the nation’s second-lowest performing large urban school district in grades four and eight. In reading and math, only about 14 percent of our students are proficient or advanced.

Really? It’s hard for me to believe that’s true. I want to see how hard those tests are. People should be aware of how difficult those tests are. I’d like to see if the majority of adults could pass those tests and be proficient or advanced. (They probably couldn’t).

As a retired FUSD elementary school teacher, I know that the teachers are working extremely hard and are being held accountable. Too bad the parents aren’t being held accountable, and the students put out very little effort.
