Kim Garo (letter April 12) claims that California liberals want an “elitist state.” Let’s look at the definition of elite: “Persons of the highest class, a group of person exercising the major share of authority or influence.”

Because of Citizens United, millionaires and billionaires control our elections. They own and control the major media outlets and corporations. They control the vast majority of wealth in this country. They certainly have the major share of influence. They are the “elites” of our society.

We now have a government that is totally staffed by millionaires and billionaires, starting in the Executive Office. The interests of these “elites” are opposite of the interests of ordinary Americans. These “elites” were not put in office by liberals. So who really wants an elitist state?
