Bill in Congress ignores special needs students
If you are the parent or teacher of a special-needs child, there is something you need to know. Presently in front of Congress is House Resolution. 610, a bill that would limit the authority of the Department of Education to “award block grants to qualified states.” Qualified states would be those that establish a voucher program.
This bill repeals the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 that authorized funding for the Department of Education to establish accountability for the education of low-income, Native American, migrant and English learner children.
H.R. 610 makes no provision for the protection of students with disabilities, such as physical and learning disabilities. If you are as concerned as I am, contact your congressman and state your strong objections. Your voice matters.
