Fresno Unified School District trustees deserve assistants, expense accounts
I am a retired teacher from Fresno Unified School District, and my two daughters are the product of Hoover and McLane high schools.
The superintendent makes many times the salary of the trustees. Trustees do not meet their own needs from the trustee salary alone, but from their outside employment.
Superintendents have assistants. Trustees need assistants, too. They also should be able to access a discretionary fund to help with needs facing their area schools.
Trustees are not required to have assistants; it’s up to them.
Trustee assistants may inform trustees about the issues the district is dealing with while they are outside the FUSD offices or research issues to help trustees in their decisions.
Transparency, responsibility and accountability are the three concepts the public may want from every staff member of the district. Staff is to serve students and parents in their educational goals.
The trustees have done a lot of work, and FUSD is headed in a new direction. Let them work.
