Catholic TV sale offers opportunity

The Catholic Diocese of Fresno is exploring the sale of KNXT, its television station, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. According to Federal Communication rules, this channel must continue to operate as a non-commercial station.

This sounds to me like an opportunity to celebrate diversity in Fresno through a collaborative effort on the part of the area’s religious groups. Fresno Metro Ministry, the Interfaith Council, Jewish, Muslim, Catholic, Protestant, Buddhist, Sikh and other religious entities could pool their resources to purchase the station. It could be used for interfaith programs featuring panel discussions about social issues, as well as cultural and religious celebrations and educational programming.

Such a television station would make a unique contribution to our community and could lead to greater understanding and appreciation among various sectarian groups.
