Critics are wrong: We need Temperance Flat
I frequently disagree with the editorial opinions of The Bee but am in strong agreement with their advocacy for a new dam at Temperance Flat.
I disagree with Larry Miller (letter Dec. 9) who does not want a dam at Temperance Flat. I would ask, “How many folks have ever even seen the miles of scenic gorge that would be flooded?”
In fact, the desperately needed reservoir would also provide a beautiful lake, additional recreational opportunities and new wildlife habitat. It would also add tourist revenue to our area.
Mr. Miller stated that the new dam “would destroy two power stations and homes,” but he doesn’t offer the number of homes that would be destroyed. The power plants can be rebuilt with additional power generated. Saying that “the loss of precipitation for five years running may be the new norm” is not correct and does not make it the new norm. We had above average rainfall last year.
Finally, he states that we can make better use of the money approved for water infrastructure projects, yet that is in fact what the people saw as the need and approved the funds for.
