Fresno State student learns tough lesson

I am a second-year Fresno State student. On Nov. 30, I was approached at Bank of America across from Fashion Fair, by a male and a female in a black 2015 VW Passat. The “brother and sister” said they didn’t have a bank account, that they just moved here from Los Angeles to attend Fresno State and asked if I could cash a check for them.

They said they would pay me $40. They seemed like nice people. I told them I didn’t need the $40, but that I would cash the check for them. I am new to banking and unaware that I was getting robbed. I thought I was helping what seemed to be genuine people get their money for school.

The guy went into the bank with me and then a second bank after they told me it isn’t possible to cash two checks for a big amount at same bank. The next day my bank account showed $-9,810. All of that I now have to pay back due to lack of anything the bank can do to help with this scam situation.

The police are involved, but little has been done besides a report.
