Clovis West sends message free speech unwelcome on campus
Responding to David Roberts’ Nov. 25 letter: It seems that the Clovis West High School administrators who removed Mr. Roberts from the school’s substitute teacher list for wearing a Black Lives Matter pin want their teachers to be robots with no thoughts of their own.
Do they think teachers whose views differ from theirs are dangerous to students and, heaven forbid, “political”? That would be very sad. A good education exposes students to the rich and varied range of human thought, experience and personality. High school students are on the brink of adulthood and deserve thoughtful teachers who are tuned in to current events and the forces that shape them.
I hope that Mr. Roberts challenges this decision. The decision is unwise. If left unchallenged, it sends a message to other teachers and students that free speech is not welcome on campus.
