Women’s head coverings are Christian and Muslim traditions

Regarding Norman C. Bitter’sletter to the editor Oct. 15 about women wearing head scarves not being Christian. I’d like to refer Mr. Bitter to 1 Corinthians 11:2-16, where Paul instructs women that they must cover their heads (wear a “head covering”) in church services and then explains why.

Basically, Paul says, that it is a shame for men to have long hair. God created women to have long hair because long hair is a natural covering and is a sign of submission to their husbands.

God created man, and man “reflects the image and glory of God,” but woman was created from man and was created for man’s sake. Therefore, “a woman should have a covering over her head to show that she is under her husband’s authority.”

So, covering your head with a head scarf is not Christian? The tradition seems to have come from the Judeo/Christian tradition, 600 years before Mohammed! When I grew up in the 1940s, all women wore hats to church for that reason. Women no longer do that, and I really don’t think that that has anything to do with whether you are a Christian or not!
