Clovis school board lives out Doc Buchanan’s philosophy
To the extent few others can claim, Clovis Unified School District has dominated my life. As the eldest daughter of founding Superintendent Doc Buchanan, a Clovis High graduate, and the principal of Temperance-Kutner Elementary until my retirement last year, I am vested in CUSD.
I learned a few things from my dad; things that I commend the current school board and administration for putting into action today. I learned that you have to fight for what you believe in, but that any smart warrior knows you must first position yourself defensibly. Modifying the dress code last spring positioned the district on the right side of the law to fight for continued local control.
I learned that change is inevitable, but there is power in being the architect and owner of your response to that change. Elected school boards cannot disregard the law. Actions taken in Clovis Unified to implement California laws and curriculum in a way that provides options for all students and maintains local control have surpassed efforts in other districts around the state.
I see the board and administration living out dad’s philosophy of a fair break for every kid, and I encourage our community to support them.
