The power of ‘she’: Worthy of respect
A while ago, a gentleman wrote a piece about his decades long career as an engineer of trains. It was fascinating. Many, many trains for many, many years. I found it quite interesting that he felt the need to be politically correct explaining, qualifying and respectfully describing why he called his trains “she.” How sad.
Think about it – a car, motorcycle, boat, ship, airplane, train, tank – all things great and powerful are referred to as “she.” Even hurricanes.
It is the longest and most potent back-handed compliment all women have ever received. Funny how men will call a powerful object with much greater strength and stamina than himself a “she” – as long as it is something he thinks he can control. Or not. Her power is infinite.
A car-insurance commercial shows a young woman talking about her wrecked car named “Brad.” Lame and stupid.
It is a “tell” that machines are referred to as “she.” Perhaps because “she” cannot talk back. Tenderly loved, pampered and treated with the utmost respect – it would serve men well to treat their human “she” (s) the same way. We are also great and powerful.
