Should unlicensed drivers get insurance?

I was recently involved in an accident with an unlicensed driver. However, he had insurance. I was very confused by this, as my insurer would never issue me insurance without being in possession of a valid license. This is when I learned that there is a loophole in the law that allows unlicensed drivers to buy auto insurance.

Granted, the major insurance companies will not do this. However there are many “fringe” insurance agencies, such as Fiesta, who do provide this service. In fact, insuring unlicensed drivers is a major part of its business. When I questioned this practice, I was told, “They are going to drive anyway, so they should have insurance to protect other drivers.”

This is blatantly unfair to those of us who play by the rules. It is also one of the reasons why we pay so much for insurance. We have to subsidize those who, for whatever reason, were not responsible enough to keep their drivers licenses.

I want to the public to know that these fringe companies are endangering our lives by allowing unlicensed drivers to flood our roadways. While technically they are not supposed to drive, they do it anyway.
