Undocumented immigrants: We need them as much as they need us

In response to the article, “Young voters from newer immigrant families lean more liberal,” from Sept. 9.

With the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 8 creeping up on us, as citizens, voices of this country, we need to pay attention to one of the topics discussed by two of the presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, which is related to immigration.

Illegal immigrants should have similar opportunities to becoming legal residents of the United States as those who are already here legally. We need them as much as they need us; they make up 90 percent of the harvest workforce in the California farming industry. Building a border will not stop individuals from coming into the United States, it is a waste of the state and national funds.

America is not a cruel, heartless country; it should be seen as welcoming and warm-hearted after all it has been through the past decades.

Yes, there are certain concerns relating to the safety and security, but our Founding Fathers were immigrants to this land as well.
