House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the Republican from Bakersfield, traveled to Clovis on Valentine’s Day to meet with area leaders, then with local reporters. It was during that time that he told me how much he dislikes The Bee’s editorials about him. He blamed me for not contacting his office, even though I had done so in the past and gotten no replies or interviews.

Contrary to the characterization by McCarthy that the editorials are rush jobs, they in fact are well-researched and extensively linked to background information. As one of the nation’s top political leaders, McCarthy’s words and actions are open to scrutiny and critical analysis.
