Does breezy weather in Fresno mean a cooler summer ahead? Meteorologist chimes in
Strong winds that blew into the Fresno area on Monday night has created unusually cooler weather for late May.
Temperatures in Fresno are expected to exceed no higher than 75 degrees through Thursday with even a slight possibility of rain due to a low pressure system that’s to the area, according to the National Weather Service in Hanford.
Gusts of winds from Monday night reached around 20 mph, and the strong winds were expected to continue after afternoon and into the evening for most of this week.
“This type of cool weather for this time of year in the Central Valley is fairly unusual,” NWS meteorologist Emily Wilson said. “Normally by now, we’re going into our hot and dry season.
“We might only see some sprinkles in the Valley on Thursday. More confidently, we can say that we’ll see some rain in the more mountainous areas.”
Is the cool weather of late a sign of a cooler summer ahead?
Wilson said the Fresno weather has been too erratic for much of the year to determine an accurate forecast roughly a month out.
“When we were in March and it was pretty warm, some were asking if that meant there was a hot summer ahead,” Wilson said. “The weather has seemed so very flip floppy.”
The Climate Prediction Center still predicts an above normal temperature for the summer, which in California officially starts June 21.
Folks will want to enjoy the cooler weather while they can.
By Saturday, the temperature highs are expected to reach in the mid to high 80s.
And next week, daily highs will crank up to the 90s, possibly as high as 95 degrees.
