On Saturday at 1:39 p.m. the NWS Phoenix AZ issued an updated extreme heat warning in effect until Sunday at 8 p.m. The warning is for Joshua Treek, Imperial County Southwest, Salton Sea, Chuckwalla Mountains, Imperial County Southeast, Imperial County West, Imperial Valley, Chiriaco Summit, Palo Verde Valley and Chuckwalla Valley.
The NWS adds to expect, "Dangerously hot conditions. Afternoon temperatures of 94 to 108 degrees. Overexposure can cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion to develop and, without intervention, can lead to heat stroke."
"Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events," adds the NWS.
This warning is in effect until Sunday at 8 p.m.
Ways to stay safe in the heat according to the NWS
- Stay hydrated: Remember to drink plenty of fluids.
- Stay in an air-conditioned room.
- Avoid direct sun exposure: Protect yourself and check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.
- Prioritize child and pet safety: Be vigilant about never leaving young children and pets in vehicles without supervision, especially during periods of intense heat, as car interiors can quickly become extremely hot.
- Exercise caution outdoors: If you work or spend time outside, take additional safety measures.
- Consider the timing: When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Recognize warning signs: Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Dress for comfort: Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. In an emergency, call 911.
