San Joaquin Valley, Fresno in dense fog period, expect travel advisories

Dense fog returned this week, later than expected, with widespread visibility down to a quarter mile — 200 feet in some locations — across the San Joaquin Valley, according to the National Weather Service Forecast office in Hanford.

Well-traveled corridors, including Interstate 5, Highway 99, Highway 152 and Highway 198, were impacted with a travel advisory posted earlier this week. The fog typically clears up by the afternoon, said NWS meteorologist Stephen McCoy.

NWS meteorologist Stephen McCoy said that Tuesday was the first real dense fog day of the season, which came a little later compared to last year.

The Central Valley is in a dense fog period, he said, which typically runs from November to early March.

“Last year, our first real dense fog day was just before Thanksgiving,” said McCoy. “That is normal for our area.”

McCoy said if people are experiencing fog, especially when driving, slow down, leaving plenty of distance between other vehicles. And the most critical thing is to use low beams. Don’t do not use hazards or high beams.

“We want to make sure that they use their low beam headlights,” he said.
