Thunderstorms roll through Fresno area with cloud-to-ground lightning near downtown
A thunderstorm came through the downtown Fresno area Monday afternoon with cloud-to-ground lightning.
Rain accompanied the thunderstorm as the National Weather Service in Hanford issued a weather statement for Sanger, Selma and Parlier until 2:15 p.m.
“Beware of lightning strikes, especially dry lightning with thunderstorms that produce less than a tenth of an inch of rain,” the NWS said on social media.
Winds were gusting up to 40 mph.
The temperature was forecasted to reach 104 degrees Monday.
The clouds that came into the region were from Tropical Storm Alberto, which produced the season’s first tropical storm and heavy rain in parts of Mexico and Texas.
The system reached the Fresno region because of a high pressure system that was rotating, according to meteorologist Stephen McCoy.
The rain was coming from the southwest, McCoy said. He expects more of the same Tuesday before the system moves out of the area later this week.
