City of Visalia declares state of emergency in anticipation of widespread flooding risk
Visalia officials on Monday evening declared a State of Emergency for the city in anticipation of the release of water from Lake Kaweah and the approach of another major storm early Tuesday.
While city crews were successful in diverting water and avoiding flooding during weekend storms, officials say water levels remain high with the next storm expected to hit at 5 a.m. Tuesday.
The Army Corps of Engineers is planning a release from Lake Kaweah at the Terminus Dam through the dam’s spillway.
“We are preparing for different scenarios that could take place over the next 48 hours ... to ensure that our city is ready,” Visalia Fire Chief Dan Griswold said
Residents were warned to fortify their property with sandbags because area waterways may spill over.
Officials urged residents to sign up for alerts by texting VISALIA to 1-844-713-7830.
Other tips included:
- Ensure an adequate supply of water, food, and cash
- Unplug electrical devices if flooding is imminent
