About three-fifths of an inch of rain fell in the Fresno area in a 36-hour stretch, the National Weather Service in Hanford reported late Sunday morning, putting the area well ahead of the seasonal norm for the first day of 2023.

The rainfall season runs from Oct. 1 to Sept 30, and the normal measure is 10.99 inches. according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

In Clovis, the rainfall was heavier; one inch of moisture was recorded, according to Antoinette Serrato, a meteorologist in Hanford.

The totals put seasonal levels for the region at about 5 inches. That’s 155% of normal.

While it’s a healthy start, it is no promise of an end to the region’s long-running drought.

At this time in 2022, Fresno had recorded even more rain, 5.21 inches, or 162% of the seasonal total. The remainder of the season was disappointing, however, as precipitation declined from January to September.
