First storm of the season is pushing toward the Fresno area. How much rain could fall?
A Pacific storm system will settle into the Fresno area Tuesday, bringing with it cooler temperatures, the chance of rain and snow in the mountains, according to the National Weather Service.
Senior Meteorologist Jeffrey Barlow said the weather for trick-or-treaters will be seasonably mild, with temperatures in the low 70s about 6 p.m. and 70 by about 8 p.m.
By Tuesday, rain is expected to arrive amid much cooler weather.
Barlow said there is a 50% chance of rain Tuesday night, decreasing to about a 20% chance Wednesday morning.
Preliminary weather models show the storm could drop up to two-tenths of an inch of rain. Up to a foot of snow may fall in the higher elevations of the Sierra Nevada.
“It is the first storm of the season,” Barlow said. “And hopefully there will be more to follow.”
Once the rain pushes through, temperatures will fall to a high of about 60 degrees Wednesday and an even chillier 58 on Thursday. By Friday, temperatures will start climbing back to the low 60s.
“It is going to feel like a shock to our system, but sweater weather has arrived,” Barlow said.
Although many will welcome the rain, Barlow reminds drivers to be extra cautious on the roads Tuesday.
“We have had a summer and half of a fall of roads without any water on them,” Barlow said. “There is a lot of oil and dirt built up on the roads and as soon as the roads get wet it can make driving hazardous.”
