Weather Service says a storm is headed to the Valley. But is there rain in store for Fresno?

weather update

There is a storm brewing, as the saying goes, and it’ll be affecting the Fresno area into early next week.

The National Weather Service says there’s a trough of low pressure hanging off the California coast, which brought in high winds Sunday and prompted a Wind Advisory for an area on the west side of the central San Joaquin Valley.

Weekend travelers likely felt the winds along Highways 33, 41, 46, 58, 152, and 198.

Also seen on Sunday: light to moderate showers to the north of Fresno County and snow flurries in the upper elevations.

More precipitation is expected into Monday and Tuesday, with the heaviest amounts “towards Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada foothills in Mariposa County, as well as the valley portions of Merced, Madera and Mariposa counties,” according to the Weather Service’s daily forecast discussion.

Rainfall rates will “most likely remain below thresholds for producing debris flows at the burn scars in Yosemite National Park and in Mariposa County,” the Weather Service said.

Just how much rain Fresno proper will get remains in question. On Saturday, the Weather Service was predicting one-tenth or one-quarter of an inch for the Fresno area. That number was later elevated to anywhere from a quarter- to one-half of an inch.

For comparison, Fresno saw .24 inches of rain for all of June.

The storm is expected to pass by Wednesday, replaced by “high pressure ridging” that will bring a return to above average temperatures (possibly above 90 degrees) by Friday.
