This election, voters will decide three open seats on the Fresno Unified school board: Area 2 (Roosevelt High region), Area 5 (Fresno High region) and Area 6 (Hoover High region).

All three areas’ incumbents are running for reelection, and each face one or more challengers. Area 2 incumbent Elizabeth Jonasson Rosas, who’s seeking her third term, is challenged by Fresno State student Joseph Aquino, a Hoover High graduate and former student trustee on the board.

Area 5 incumbent Andy Levine has drawn two challengers, James Martinez, president of the Fresno County Board of Education, and Emma Villa, an educator and advocate for special-needs. Area 6 incumbent Claudia Cazares is competing against retired teacher and administrator Dan Bordona.

Fresno Unified is the third-largest school district in the state with more than 68,000 students in 106 schools. It has a yearly budget of over $2.1 billion, making it the “biggest fiscal driver from Bakersfield to Sacramento,” according to former Superintendent Bob Nelson.

The seven-member governing board is grappling with declining enrollment, underperforming test scores, and the need to hire a permanent superintendent.

The Fresno Bee sat down to talk to every candidate to help voters make informed decisions. Here is all you need to know about Fresno Unified’s board races.
