KYIV, Ukraine - The number of people killed overnight in Ukraine in one of Russia's longest air assaults in the four-year war rose to eight, Tymur Tkachenko, Kyiv's military administrator, reported on Thursday.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram that a residential block had been virtually destroyed. The fate of nearly 20 people who may have been in the building remains unknown.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Kiltschko said the body of a 12-year-old girl was one of those pulled from the rubble. A further around 40 people had been injured in the capital, he added.

Zelenskyy said that 180 structures had been damaged, 50 of them ordinary apartment blocks. He said that seven people had been injured in the region around Kyiv, 28 in Kharkiv and two in Odessa.

The previous day, Russian forces carried out one of their heaviest and longest attacks since the full-scale invasion in February 2022, using more than 800 drones. At least six people were killed and dozens injured in the attacks, Zelenskyy said, describing the strikes as "terror."

The attacks followed a three-day pause in the fighting as Russia marked the anniversary of the end of World War II with a military parade on Moscow's Red Square.

The Kremlin rejected an offer of an extension to the ceasefire from Kyiv.
