Iran: U.S. strikes violated cease-fire

May 26 (UPI) -- Iran said the U.S. strikes on Iran Monday were a "gross violation" of the fragile cease-fire between the two countries that began on April 8.

"The United States committed a gross violation of the ceasefire in the Hormozgan region in the past 48 hours. ... Iran holds the U.S. regime responsible for all the consequences resulting from these aggressive and unjustified actions," the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

Gen. Seyed Majid Mousavi, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force, said on X: "Negotiation with the enemy is pure loss. ... The treacherous enemy has once again violated the cease-fire during the time of negotiations. The Aerospace Force of the IRGC is prepared for a decisive, swift response and the implementation of measures ordered by the esteemed Commander-in-Chief."

A statement posted on X attributed to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei warned the U.S. and its allies of renewed attacks, The Hill reported.

"What is certain in this regard is that the hands of time will not turn back, and the nations and lands of the region will no longer serve as shields for U.S. bases," Khamenei said in his statement. "The United States will no longer have a safe haven for its mischief and for establishing military bases in West Asia."

Capt. Tim Hawkins of the U.S. Central Command said in a statement that the strikes were "self-defensive" and were launched "to protect our troops from threats posed by Iranian forces."

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubiosaid that a peace plan was close.

President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social Monday evening, around the same time the strikes began: "The Enriched Uranium (Nuclear Dust!) will either be immediately turned over to the United States to be brought home and destroyed or, preferably, in conjunction and coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran, destroyed in place or, at another acceptable location, with the Atomic Energy Commission, or its equivalent, being witness to this process and event."

Rubio said a peace deal was still possible, but it would "take a few days," the BBC reported.

On Monday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "Negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran are proceeding nicely! It will only be a Great Deal for all or, no Deal at all -- Back to the Battlefront and shooting, but bigger and stronger than ever before -- And nobody wants that!"

In the same post, he asked leaders of several Middle East nations to join the Abraham Accords, a set of agreements created in 2020 that established diplomatic normalization between Israel and several Arab nations.
