A mom without custody of her 6-year-old son pulled out two knives and repeatedly stabbed a Child Protective Services worker trying to get her to sign paperwork, Georgia authorities said.

The 23-year-old CPS worker survived the attack, and the mom is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and a count of cruelty to children, according to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office.

McClatchy News is not identifying the mom to protect her child’s identity. Her attorney information was not available in court records Dec. 10.

The 33-year-old mom lived with her 6-year-old autistic son and her mom, who had custody of her son, deputies said in an incident report.

The grandmother reached out to CPS to report her daughter’s abuse and said she didn’t feel safe with her daughter in the same home as her and her grandson, deputies said.

The grandmother gathered paperwork about her daughter’s behavior and presented it to a CPS worker during a Dec. 4 visit to a Grovetown apartment, according to deputies.

The CPS worker told the grandmother to get an eviction order and placed the mom under supervised visitation, then had the grandmother sign a document, investigators said.

When the worker asked the mom to sign the document, the mom “stood in front of her with a blank look” then got two knives and stabbed the worker multiple times, deputies said in the report.

The grandmother pulled her daughter off the CPS worker, who ran out of the apartment, then the mom went into her son’s bedroom, according to deputies.

She walked out of the room and said, “I don’t know why I did that, I’m leaving,” the report says.

Her son was in the apartment at the time, according to deputies.

First responders said they found the CPS worker “holding her face and covered in blood,” and she was taken to a hospital.

When deputies went inside the apartment, they said they found the grandmother bleeding from cuts on her hands with blood on her shirt.

The mom had already fled, but deputies said they later found her hiding in the woods near the complex.

Columbia County is on the Georgia-South Carolina border and is part of the Augusta metropolitan area.
