Two toddlers were found dead inside a car by family members on a day temperatures reached 90 degrees outside, Oklahoma police said.

The 2-year-olds were left in the vehicle for an “extended period of time” in the afternoon of Sept. 5, Norman police said the next day in a news release.

Police say the children were left there by accident.

The toddlers’ cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner as officials continue to investigate, police said.

No one has been arrested.

A child should never be left unattended in a vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A child’s body temperature can rise three to five times faster than an adult’s, according to the administration, and get heat stroke when their body reaches 104 degrees.

Children can die if their body temperature reaches 107 degrees, officials said.

Norman is about a 20-mile drive south from Oklahoma City.
