A 79-year-old man called police to say he killed his wife, then hung up, Colorado officials said.

Although the phone call from Stephen Chan disconnected, deputies were able to trace the phone’s location to an area in unincorporated El Paso County, authorities said in a Sept. 3 news release.

The number was associated with a home in Colorado Springs, deputies said.

After the call, deputies got reports of a body that had been dumped near a road, officials said.

The body was later identified as Stephen Chan’s wife, 54-year-old Jian Chan, deputies said.

Colorado Springs officers responded to the home to perform a welfare check, but Stephen Chan had already gone to the police station where officers detained him, officials said.

Deputies didn’t specify what led to the killing or Jian Chan’s cause of death.

Stephen Chan was charged with murder and kidnapping, deputies said.
