Experienced rafter dies after falling into river in Colorado canyon, cops say
A 38-year-old experienced rafter died after falling overboard into a river in Colorado, deputies said.
The man was with a group when he fell into the water and vanished at about 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 in the Colorado River in Gore Canyon, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office said.
The group eventually spotted him in the water and pulled him out, deputies said in a Facebook post. He was unresponsive.
Rescuers had to go through “challenging and mountainous terrain” to reach the man, deputies said, so they used a high-rail truck.
Rescuers found that “lifesaving interventions had been exhausted and the man was determined deceased on scene,” deputies said.
He was wearing a helmet and flotation device, deputies said.
A coroner will determine his cause of death.
His body was found at Pyrite Rapids, which is near Kremmling.
Kremmling is about 105 miles northwest of Denver.
