Hiker dies after tumbling 50 feet down Colorado cliff as family member calls for help
A man was hiking and scrambling down Colorado mountains with his family when he tumbled down a cliff and died, authorities said.
The hikers were scrambling off the E.M. Greenman Trail just west of Boulder at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 6, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
The man was identified as a 63-year-old Boulder resident, officials said. The sheriff’s office did not release the man’s name.
He was scrambling down a scree slope just south of the trail with a family member, who told authorities he fell about 15 feet down a rock face.
After that fall, he tumbled 50 feet down a steep hillside, officials said. The family member then called 911 for help and reported he could no longer feel the man’s pulse.
Bystanders rushed to help but to no avail. Rescuers pronounced him dead when they arrived, officials said.
Authorities are investigating and don’t suspect foul play, according to the news release.
The 3.6-mile loop is considered challenging, according to AllTrails. In comments, people who’ve hiked the trail said some parts were steep and rocky.
