One little white dog in Tennessee might put his critter hunting days behind him after a close call.

On May 6, the Clarksville Fire Rescue received a call saying there was a dog trapped down a storm drain, according to a Facebook post.

Multiple crews responded, and when they arrived, they found a covered drain going deep into the ground.

Inside the drain was Oskar.

Oskar, a white Dotson, had been chasing an opossum when he followed the animal into the drain and couldn’t escape, according to the fire department.

Oskar’s family couldn’t reach him, so the firefighters had to suit up.

In comments made on the post, the fire department said it had to cut away the grate that covered the storm drain to get access.

“Squad 1 setup a tripod and dropped into the drain to retrieve Oskar,” the fire department said.

Just a short time later, Oskar was hoisted back to the surface.

“He was reunited with his family,” the fire department said, “and the opossum got away.”

Oskar was photographed thanking his rescuer with a handshake.

Clarksville is about 50 miles northwest of Nashville.
